Military’s POW/MIA ‘deserve to be buried with honor’

On Friday, 19 September 2014, a grateful country observed POW/MIA Recognition Day, a day set aside to remember those who were prisoners of war and the 83,189 Americans who are still missing in action or unaccounted for from World War II to the present. The day – observed on the third Friday of September each year – was established by Congress as part of the Defense Authorization Act of 1998. On Thursday, President Obama issued a proclamation declaring National POW/MIA Recognition Day:

“Americans who gave their last full measure of devotion deserve to be buried with honor and dignity, and those who are still unaccounted for must be returned to their families. We will never give up our search for them, and we will continue our work to secure the release of our citizens who are unjustly detained abroad.”
